Tray frames are a simple and effective way of framing works without glazing. The artwork is set back from the from face for protection and the borders can be adjusted for preference.
Pictured is a black stained tulip wood tray frame with a hand wax finish. A thin 6mm front face is in proportion with the small sized artwork, a dry mounted fibre based photograph on a painted wooden panel.
Tray frames can be finished in any style, just like a standard frames with glazing but are much more suited to canvasses, painting on boards or dry-mounted photographs like the one here.
